What Can You Learn from Cotton Eye Joe?

Next time you kick up your heels to Cotton Eye Joe, you can also think about time. Where did it come from? Where did it go?

I don’t know where, but I’m certain Time is just going to go. We can’t actually find, or make, or even save Time. Anyone who says different is trying to sell you something. Time can only be spent, and it spends with or without your participation. Photography how I like to mark Time. It’s a beautiful way to say “I was here. This is who I was. I mattered.”

Because all we can actually do it prioritize. Choose how we spend our Time. “I don’t have time to exercise” actually means “It’s not a priority.” That re-frame maybe stings, but it’s also pretty freeing if you really take it to heart. Because now you just choose your priorities, and then do those. And then, draw hard boundaries to protect your Time – your priorities.

If you want to tell me or folks around you that you didn’t do a thing because you “didn’t have time,” it’s ok. I do it when the thing wasn’t a priority and I just want to be let off the hook. But I’m never kidding myself.
