About a year after graduating from NYU, I got my start in professional photography when my friends had a baby. It went something like “Hey, can you take some artsy pictures of the baby? We can just go to the park or something.” I shot film back then, black and white, and weaseled myself into the Pratt darkroom to process and print those pictures. Now that little girl is 6 years old, I shoot weddings and those pictures are still around in my friends’ house. Those pictures are family treasures. Especially because I’ve lost track of the negatives—I’ve moved about uh, 4 times since then. So, when a friend here in Colorado had her baby, I was happy to shoot. Makenna was about 3 months old here, and these were just shot in her living room… in those golden moments between being fed and falling asleep. Those golden moments of happy baby.
It always amazes me how many expressions babies can make. I think these show a small sampling. She’s a precious little flirt in that last one, I think. She’s gonna be trouble!
